Director General of WHO
Dr. Tedros Adhanon was elected WHO Director-General in May 2017. Dr. Tedros was elected by multiple candidates of the World Health Assembly.
About Dr Tedros Adhanom
Dr. Tedros Adhanon, who was born in Asmara, Eritrea, is the first person from the WHO African Region to serve as WHO’s chief technical and administrative officer. Before his appointment in 2017, Dr. Tedros served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, leading efforts negotiating Addis Ababa Action Agenda.
Dr. Tedros also had incredible success throughout his time as Ethiopia’s Minister of Health. In this role from 2005-2012, he helped reform the country’s health system. Tedros helped improve healthcare access for millions of people and invested extensively in health infrastructure.
With a Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Community Health from the University of Nottingham and a Masters Degree from the University of London, you can imagine Dr. Tedros has been immensely involved in the emergency response to the pandemic.
